ABSTRACT

This chapter explores one of the three progressivist interest groups that lobbied for educational reform, representing developmental psychology and child study. This chapter examines the educationists’ increasing interest in and examination of the individual’s biological and psychological aspects. The child, here, is principally seen from an organic lens and interpreted in naturalistic rhetoric. Child study, stressing mental hygiene, social adjustment, and developmental psychology, offered a distinct orientation towards the individual; it represents a kind of progressive education in Ontario
