ABSTRACT

Plants cultivated on ash and mine-dumps do not always have a higher content of heavy metals than those cultivated on soil. Application of slurry is a very efficient treatment in the reclamation of ash and mine-dumps. It is probable that air pollution contaminates food chains more than polluted soils. Projects concerning the environment in Czechoslovakia are conducted by the State Commission of Science, Technology and Economics. The relation of the environment to agriculture is included in the projects of the Ministry of Agriculture and the Research Institute for Crop Production. The negative effects of industrial activity on agriculture are both direct and indirect. The most important requirement in the reclamation of industrial waste-sites (ash and mine-dumps) is to increase biological activity. The indirect effects of industry on plant production are caused by aerial emissions. In Czechoslovakia damage caused to agricultural production from emissions is assessed using measurements of SO2 in air.
