ABSTRACT

This chapter describes a fuzzy logic-based tool which is currently in use in clinical practice. Diagnostic decision in intensive care medicine requires medical knowledge adapted to the preferences of the physician and enriched with his experience. The most problematic part of this task is the transformation of the medical knowledge from experts into a knowledge base that can be used in a computer program. Transformation from knowledge in a colloquial form to a knowledge base requires a computerized notation. A Florida rule has the task of making human-like knowledge, expressed in a colloquial rule, available to the computer. The physicians knowledge is validated in the sense that they use it successfully in their daily practice. Transferring this knowledge into knowledge-based systems usually requires a transformation of the knowledge. The knowledge processing must know about the variety of meanings of symptoms, clinical signs, and data, and take them into account.
