ABSTRACT

Mnemonic techniques show that when maximum use is made of imagery and association, memory can be almost perfect. Most psychological tests of memory are misleading if they are taken as an indication of memory capacity. They are generally only elucidating the mechanisms of memory, and in order to elucidate any one particular mechanism, one has to eliminate all other mechanisms that might confound the experiment. Several psychologists have tried to measure the difference between intentional recall and recognition. One of the most amazing examples of memory being retrieved under hypnosis has been reported from Yale University. Under hypnosis people can often recall events that took place while they were apparently unconscious, for example, under an anesthetic during an operation. Several police forces are now beginning to use hypnosis in the investigation of crime. In Israel witnesses of terrorist attacks have, under hypnosis, been able to give detailed descriptions of the people involved.
