ABSTRACT

Set will often continue for some time after the initial expectation. A person may have had a name on the tip of his tongue but not have been able to recall it. Any belief system will make a person “set” to notice those events and facts that support their belief and miss those that do not. This is why two people can hold completely opposite views about religion, politics, education, the state of the economy, the mind, or the nature of reality and each find, from his own experience, that the world is the way he believes it to be. Often belief alone is enough to effect a cure. One's own self-image is a form of mental set. The person who has a low opinion of himself, say, as someone who never really succeeds, is set to notice his failures more than his successes.
