Gender as Culture: Competent Case Management for Women with Major Psychiatric Disorders
It is with good reason that we introduce clients by their age, ethnicity, and gender, as in "this is a 45-year-old African-American female." All three variables work together to provide a context for the psychosocial understanding of the person. Age has a profound influence on psychiatric issues. The female's life cycle is more extended and medically complex than that of the male. Ethnicity influences the formation of psychiatric symptoms, social circumstances, and reproductive issues. Finally, in some cases gender will provide a protection and in others a vulnerability to the development of certain medical and psychiatric disorders.
