ABSTRACT

And the soldiers made ready for battle and sounded the trumpets. And they distributed the elephants among the phalanxes and for every elephant they appointed a thousand men, wearing coats of mail, and on their heads helmets of brass.… And the rest of the horsemen they set on the two wings of the army to strike terror into the enemy and to serve as protection for the phalanxes. And when the sun shone upon the shields of gold and brass, the mountains glistened therewith and blazed like torches of fire.
