The Growth of the Road Transport Industry and the Problem of Road and Rail Competition

The war of 1914-18 retarded the growth ofcivil motor transport in Britain because of fuel scarcity and the need to give priority in the use of scarce resources to military requirements. The Allied military authorities did, however, make considerable use of motor transport on the western front, which did much to prove its possibilities and bring about a post\var boom in the industry.
