ABSTRACT
An important characteristic of tbe development of spelling may be thus formulated: In the Middle Ages the general tendency was towards representing the same sound in the same way, wherever it was found, while the sa.me word was not always spelt in tbe same manner. Nowadays greater importance is attached to representing the !."ame word always in the same manner, while tbe same sounn may be differently written in different words.
