16.11. The ending here termed ‘the ordinary s-ending’, has three forms according to the final sound of the word to which it is added:

[iz] after one of the sibilants [z, s, ʒ, ʃ], as in noses [nouziz]. adzes [ædziz]. horses [hɔ˙siz]. fox's [fɔksiz]. changes [tʃein(d)ʒiz]. villages [vilidʒiz]. dishes [diʃiz]. churches [tʃə˙tʃiz].

[z] voiced, after voiced non-sibilants, as in cabs [kæbz]. rides [raidz]. bags [bægz]. lambs [læmz]. man's [mænz]. rings [riɳz]. proves [pnr˙vz]. bathes [beiðz]. falls [fɔ˙lz]. pears [pɛ˙əz]. pities [pitiz]. virtues [və˙tju˙z]. mamma's [mə'ma˙z]. boys [boiz].

[s] voiceless, after voiceless non-sibilants, as in caps [kæps]. rights [raits]. backs [bæks]. proofs [pnr˙fs]. baths [ba˙þs] (vb).
