ABSTRACT
The third part, Syntax, to a very great extent is taken up with detailing the signification (i.e. function) of those flexional forms which were dealt with from another point of view in the first part (cases of nouns, tenses, and moods of verbs, etc.), but not of those treated in the section Word-formation. In some chapters on syntax, on the other hand, we find that the formal and functional sides of each phenomenon are treated in one and the same place (the construction of sentences, word-order).
