ABSTRACT

Spencer, whom we have seen advising Chiswick to try trolleybuses in 1910, was born in Halifax in December 1875. He began his career as a pupil on the Blackpool conduit tramway in 1889 and became electrician to the South Staffordshire Tramways in 1892, so that his experience of electric tramways actually antedated that of Robinson. His appointment as manager of the important Bradford Corporation Tramways in March 1898 was proof enough of his outstanding ability.
