ABSTRACT

By the middle of 1922 the Associated Equipment Co Ltd, then of Walthamstow, and an associate of the Underground group, produced a new 4-wheel single-deck trolleybus, the prototype of a design which it supplied subsequently to Shanghai and Singapore. It was first tested on the Mitcham-Croydon and Croydon-Penge/Crystal Palace routes of the Smet. By early February it was being put through its paces on the Merton-Summerstown route. On February 10, a cyclist collided with the unfamiliar vehicle in Haydons Road as it slowly moved away from a service test stop by Plough Lane corner. He was killed but the verdict was accidental death, Aec's driver being cleared of blame. The widow brought an unsuccessful action.
