ABSTRACT
Historical urban demography places a great deal of emphasis on migration. Indeed, it sometimes appears that historians pause to examine urban fertility and mortality only long enough to satisfy themselves and their readers that the demographic phenomenon of real importance - the one worthy of serious study - is migration. It is worth pausing for a moment to consider the implications of this for pre-industrial urbanization.
