ABSTRACT
This chapter provides the context for presenting a theoretical outline of urban geography in the remainder of the book. The presentation of such a theory in only seven chapters is a considerable generalization, so a discussion of the changing structure of society in a single introductory chapter must be even more generalized. Thus what follows is an extremely sketchy outline of the general trends that have resulted in contemporary world societies.
