ABSTRACT
The main variables affecting Delhi's physical-spatial development in the second half of the nineteenth century are those of the power-relationship of colonialism and the introduction of inanimate-powered technology. The period is characterised by five inter-related developments, three of them the outcome of the confrontation between representatives of the two cultures in 1857 (variously described as the ‘Indian Mutiny’ and ‘First War of Indian Independence’).
