ABSTRACT

The pragmatic requirements of clinical practice gradually led to the expansion of Freud’s original theories. In 1936 his daughter, Anna Freud, published The Ego and the Mechanisms of Defense (A. Freud, 1936/1946). This work maintained that the ego of every human being, even of healthy individuals, is constantly engaged in the process of modulating drives to decrease anxiety.
