II Conditions That Promote Enduring Change

It sometimes appears that permanent change is almost impossible to achieve given all the impediments, obstacles, challenges, and resistance along the way. Yet looked at from another point of view, change is so natural and inevitable that often all you have to do is go along for the ride and resist the urge to put the brakes on. This is especially the case when people become so desperate that they have very little left to lose. "There is a certain relief in change," noted author Washington Irving ( 1824/l993), "even though it can be from bad to worse; as I have found travelling in a stage-coach, that it is often a comfort to shift one's position and be bruised in a new place."
