ABSTRACT

Beside the Rhône, not far from its estuary, is the bastide town of Beaucaire. The main road bypasses the town, but the more inquisitive refuse to be swept along by the momentum of the highway and divert into the narrow streets of the town. From a distance the town centre with its church is clearly visible. Once inside the place the buildings seem to close over the visitor, destroying all sense of orientation. Streets are almost unbelievably narrow and routes quite inscrutable. Only the most persistent effort is rewarded with the disclosure of the town centre. It is a perfect example of maze planning, and carries a particular kind of satisfaction potential.
