ABSTRACT

WHETHER A COMMUNITY IS RURAL or urban, it is divided into status groups and, whether this division is formalized or not, it will be recognized generally by the people, and there will be what may be called an approximate conformity to it. Such a social stratification which places people in a status relationship with one another is an essential part of the social order of the society in which it is found. The class structure may be simple or complex; in either case it will reflect the ways of life and work in that particular society and locality, as it will also reflect the different developmental phases of the people.
