ABSTRACT

One of the most common causes of poor history teaching is that student teachers have not thought through clearly the purposes of school history, and do not have a sound grasp of the full breadth of benefits that young people can derive from the study of the past. If you are going to dedicate your professional life to becoming a history teacher, you ought to be able to justify the worth of your subject’s place on the school timetable, and understand why the study of history will be of use to your students.
