ABSTRACT

Design and technology was first introduced to the school curriculum in England and Wales in 1989 and is now firmly established as an important part of the curriculum in many countries. This chapter explores some definitions of design and technology. It considers the rationale for the inclusion of the subject on the school curriculum. Design and technology has a complex history, deriving from craft traditions, linked to manufacturing and industrial practices, incorporating design work and embracing new technologies. Design and technology contributes to the school curriculum by preparing all young people to participate in a rapidly changing technological world. It enables them to understand how to think and intervene creatively to improve the world, combining their knowledge with understanding of aesthetics and function. In Scotland, aspects of design and technology will be found under the area of 'technologies', whilst home economics contributes to pupils' learning in 'health and well-being'.
