ABSTRACT

The role of assessment within design and technology is the key to the successful teaching, learning and development of the subject. Every school will have guidelines on the methods and process of assessment to be used. The design and technology departmental policy on assessment should be linked to the school policy, although there will be differences to take account of the nature of the subject. If used in a positive framework, assessment can motivate and encourage pupils. To do this it is important to focus on some key issues that will develop the pupils' responses and therefore their understanding. Assessment of pupils aged 14—16 is directed by the requirements of the awarding body that teachers department has chosen. In England the examination boards are monitored by the Qualifications Curriculum Authority (QCA); there are similar regulatory bodies in other countries. The QCA monitors the work of the awarding bodies to ensure that all their work is within the regulations.
