ABSTRACT

This chapter explores how teachers can use information and communications technology (ICT) in their teaching to aid pupil learning. It considers the different uses of ICT within design and technology, along with issues for classroom management. There is likely to be both a school and departmental policy in place which will outline ICT that design and technology department is responsible for teaching or using, and how this will be taught. Key ideas to look out for are: generating, modelling and communicating ideas; using computer-aided design (CAD)/computer-aided manufacturing; data acquisition and manipulation and impact of technology. The chapter considers the various aspects of design and technology and how ICT can be incorporated to aid pupils' learning. Designs can be produced by pupils using CAD, drawing, art or paint packages. The benefits of pupils using these are that their designs can easily be modified without endless redrawing or redrafting, and they can explore using different shapes, scales, proportions, colours and typefaces.
