ABSTRACT
Over the past thirty years or so, some important developments have taken place in our knowledge of language. In particular the use of audio recording systems has made it possible to study language as people actually use it, giving us valuable insights which have implications for teachers. We have become aware that we use language in different ways according to our background, the particular situation, the persons to whom we are speaking, the subject matter and so on.
