ABSTRACT

Drawing is a very natural form of expression for young children which they enjoy using from a very young age. Drawing and other forms of art also have much to contribute to the teaching of other subjects and in topic work but it is important that it is explored as a subject in its own right. Four areas need exploration:

Children need first-hand experience of drawing and this can usefully be part of other work, although encouragement to draw anything and everything is also needed.

They need to explore what different media will do, in both two and three dimensions.

They need the opportunity to think about putting these skills together to make compositions of one sort or another in both two and three dimensions.

They need, perhaps at a later stage, to study the works of artists and to explore some of the ideas and techniques they see used.
