ABSTRACT

Before we go further we should be clear about two important points: that not all learning in science involves inquiry and not all inquiry is scientific inquiry. It is not expected that all science learning will involve inquiry. There are some things, such as conventions, names and the basic skills of using equipment, that are more efficiently learnt by direct instruction, as and when they are needed. But if we are talking about the development of understanding and ideas that depend on gathering and interpreting data, then inquiry is the appropriate activity and ought to be used.
