Information for summative assessment The characteristics of formative and summative assessment (p. 177) indicate that formative is close to the learning, providing quick feedback into decisions about learning activities. Summative assessment is more distant from the learning and less detailed but nevertheless its impact should be to help in decisions that improve children’s learning opportunities, albeit through a much longer feedback loop.
