ABSTRACT

Euskara, as the Basques call their language, is an isolate, with no known relatives. Structural analogies with Caucasian languages have been pointed out, and from time to time attempts are made to connect Basque with various other languages and language families. No conclusive evidence has been adduced, however, and it seems safer to regard Basque as a relic of the prehistoric language or languages spoken in the Iberian peninsula before the arrival of Indo-European.
