ABSTRACT

This language – also known as Fulani (actually a Hausa ethnonym), Fulfulde and Pulaar (actually a dialect of the language) – belongs to the Atlantic branch of the extensive Niger-Congo phylum. The total number of Fulani speakers is estimated at about 10 million, the great majority of whom live in northern and eastern Nigeria. Others are scattered over a dozen West African states, from Chad to the seaboard. The Adamawa dialect is described here.
