ABSTRACT
Modern Greek belongs to the Hellenic branch of Indo-European, of which it is the only member. It is the official language of Greece, where it is spoken by over 12 million people, and joint official language of Cyprus; in addition, there are large Greek-speaking communities in many countries. A dialect of Greek is still spoken in a few villages in Calabria in Southern Italy.
