ABSTRACT
This, the major language of West Africa, belongs to the Chadic branch of the Afro-Asiatic phylum. It is spoken as mother tongue by over 25 million people, and used as second language and lingua franca by at least another 12 million, and is one of the official languages of the Republic of Nigeria. It is an important lingua franca in Ghana.
