ABSTRACT

This South Dravidian language is spoken by over 50 million people in the south Indian state of Tamil Nadu. There are also at least 3.5 million speakers in northeastern Sri Lanka, and at least another million scattered through South-East Asia, Singapore, Indonesia, Polynesia (Fiji), South Africa and Guyana. It is an official language in India, Sri Lanka, Singapore and Malaysia.
