ABSTRACT

Children can find ‘living things in their environment’ one of the most interesting and rewarding aspects of science, not least because it can involve lots of practical outdoor work. The key concepts of this area of science are concerned with the diversity and quantity of living things in particular places, the ways in which living things interact with each other and how animals and plants are adapted to survive and thrive in their environment. As children come to understand that animals are intimately connected to the places where they live, they will begin to appreciate that ecosystems need to be left undisturbed, protected or managed.
