ABSTRACT

Dyslexia is associated particularly with reading and spelling problems. It is described as a ‘specific’ learning difficulty as it represents a problem in one or more basic psychological processes. Closer scrutiny of the word highlights its meaning. It originates from the Greek word ‘dyslexia': ‘dys’ meaning ‘difficulty’ or ‘malfunction’ and ‘lexia’, taken from the root word ‘lexis’ meaning words. Use of this term implies that dyslexia is not merely a reading difficulty but encompasses a wide range of language-based problems, accounting for a delay in aspects of both spoken and written language.
