ABSTRACT

This chapter traces the development of court management training, describes what training is available, and discusses trends for the 1990s. At the beginning of the 1960s, only a handful of professional managers were serving at the trial court and state administrative levels. The decade of the 1970s was marked by a number of significant developments in the field of court administration. Initially, the Court Executive Development Program was a full-time six-month course designed to aid individuals making a career change from some other profession or activity to court administration. Beginning in 1972, court administration training became more broadly available. Training opportunities continued to expand throughout the 1970s and 1980s. Training and development must be built into it on all levels—training and development that never stop. Good management requires that training and professional development is ongoing, high-priority activities available to everyone who shares in the responsibility for managing courts.
