ABSTRACT
In the preceding chapter we had some examples in which groups that were already familiar were identified with matrix groups. In particular, Exercises 9.1, 9.2, 9.6, and 9.7 set up isomorphisms between abstract groups and matrix groups. Such correspondences turn out to be useful in group theory, but we do not need to limit our consideration to isomorphisms. Hence, we’ll introduce the following terminology.
