The Burnside Counting Theorem
In this chapter We’ll apply some group theory to counting problems. In particular, a pure group-theoretic result of W. F. Burnside (Theory of Groups of Finite Order , 2nd ed. New York: Dover, 1911, reprinted 1955) has been shown to have nice applications to this sort of problem. We’ll also see how Burnside’s result ties in with characters, as discussed in previous sections.
