ABSTRACT

The goalkeeper is the last line of defence and he has a specialised role. Hughes (1980) stated that of all the eleven individuals in a soccer team the goalkeeper is the most important. If his performance is poor, he can and does lose matches on his own account. There have been several studies of the goalkeeper. From the point of view of goalkeeper's judgement, Eda (1969) studied the anticipation of a shooter's motion, and Kanamoto (1979) reported on the eye-fixation diffusion of the goalkeeper. Nakayashiki (1980) analysed the posture of the goalkeepr and Tamai (1979) and Masunaga (1984) reported on the effect of pre-jump on the jumping motion. However, there has only been one study (Asai, 1982) which has been concerned with the main motion of the Goalkeeper diving action. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to analyse the goalkeeper's diving motion by cinefilm analysis.
