ABSTRACT
The treatment of the incapable patient will be considered in later chapters in relation to particular forms of treatment (for example, organ donation; medical research; and – where the patient is terminally ill or gravely incapacitated). In this chapter we will concentrate on the basic legal framework and general principles, making particular reference to so-called non-therapeutic areas relating to the control of fertility by sterilisation and abortion.
