ABSTRACT

GAYATRI CHAKRAVORTY SPIVAK (B. 1942) is an Indian-American university professor at Columbia University. She was educated in India and the US and taught at different American universities prior to her appointment at Columbia in 1991. A prolifi c fi gure in postcolonial studies, she has been infl uential in a number of central debates in the literary theory of recent decades, ranging from deconstruction, feminism and Marxism to the future of literary studies. Having addressed issues of translation frequently, she has herself translated Jacques Derrida’s Of Grammatology and works of Indian literature.
