ABSTRACT

SHU-MEI SHIH (B. 1961) TEACHES IN the areas of modern and contemporary Chinese literature, sinophone literature, Asian American literature, literary theory, feminism, Marxism and transnational studies in the Department of Comparative Literature at UCLA. Throughout her career Shu-mei Shih has been interested in the problematic relationships obtaining between Europe, or more broadly speaking the West, and the nonWest. This interest speaks from her fi rst book, The Lure of the Modern: Writing Modernism in Semicolonial China, 1917-1937 (University of California Press, 2001), as well as from her numerous other publications, some of which, such as Minor Transnationalism (Duke University Press, 2006), have been realized in collaboration with her colleague Françoise Lionnet.
