ABSTRACT
Prior to 1990, the Luxembourg fleet was comprised mainly of inland waterway vessels. Since that date, government policy has been to expand the national fleet to include seagoing vessels. This process was made possible by the opening of the International Ship Register in 1991. On 1 January 2009 there were 188 vessels on the Luxembourg Register with a gross tonnage of 1,249,022.
