ABSTRACT

Two years on it makes sense to summarize the developments both in the relevant democracy promotion literature and on the ground in the post-Soviet space and the Western Balkans. 1 However, because of recent events in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA), we also need to look outside the original region of focus and ask two questions. First, which of our findings can be relevant for democracy promoters in the MENA region? Second, what do the developments in MENA imply for changes in democracy promotion vis-à-vis the post-Soviet space? This latter question indicates that our original research question about the extent to which democracy promoters took changes in context into account after the ‘colour revolutions’ can now be expanded in a fruitful way. Namely, we can now ask how significant changes in domestic context in another region (MENA) have an impact on democracy promotion regarding the countries analysed in this volume.
