Higher-level Practices and Key Performance Drivers

How firms decide to proceed on each of the foundation practices described in the previous chapter has consequences for the business and its employees. These consequences occur on two levels that we term ‘higher-level practices’ and ‘key performance drivers’. Managers can decide that they want employees to self-manage, work in teams or be innovative and engaged, but whether this happens usually depends on the necessary foundation practices being in place.
