ABSTRACT

respondents report paying “very close” attention to the Tonya Harding/Nancy Kerrigan news reports during the first month of the scandal: the poll reveals that in American minds Skategate eclipsed health care reform, the economy, and President Clinton's first State of the Union address. While this story was reported by a variety of news venues, probably most people followed it on television. As the story spread like wildfire from the tabloids to the nightly network news, grumbling about the “tabloidization” of American journalism could be heard again.
