It is still sometimes assumed that nineteenth-century degeneration theories were little more than pseudo-scientific ranting. They were always, and still remain, much more than that; as W i l l i a m Greenslade has indicated, there is a line of descent from the original degeneration theorists through to the Holocaust of the 1 9 4 0 s .
