One Singer’s Formulaic Tradition: The Repertoire of Garfield Akers

Although the preceding chapter examined actual blues performances, its main concern was still competence: the frequency of generalizedperhaps even idealized-formulaic predications. To understand blues compositional performance requires an examination of the songs themselves. To show how the blues singer manipulated the rules of compositional competence outlined in previous chapters, I analyze in this chapter the repertoire of one particular artist-Garfield Akers.
