Local planning in practice: conclusions and implications

At a more local level the Southtown local plan (see Chapter 4, Section 4.7.2) and the proposed industrial and commercial developments at Miskin (see Chapter 7, Section 7.5) emphasize the inter-related nature of local planning problems. Thus in Southtown the proposed economic regeneration of the area was inextricably linked with issues of housing policy, traffic, conservation, the redistribution of retail turnover and the relative power of the District and County Councils. In the case of Miskin, the proposed industrial and warehouse development showed the inter-relationship between the wider issue of employment generation, and conservation, sewage disposal, the loss of agricultural land, and the protection of industrial sites already agreed in the relevant structure plans in other parts of South Wales.
