Over the years significant modifications in laws addressing communicated threats have changed the landscape as it pertains to responding to threat in the workplace. It has become easier in some jurisdictions for legal, human resource, and security professionals to obtain investigative support from law enforcement. A national organization was originated by the Los Angeles Police Department's Threat Management Unit: the Association of Threat Assessment Professionals (ATAP). ATAP holds an annual conference that provides basic training and advanced seminars for police. Assessments by organizations with the collaboration of enforcement support can facilitate action by the judicial system. During a threat management crisis, it is often helpful to provide a comprehensive security briefing to any victim or witness to a workplace violence incident. The police are more organized and more responsive to organizations regarding workplace violence, and organizational professionals should develop contacts and foster relationships with local law enforcement.
